How to delete bookmarks in Chrome

Chrome gives you three ways to remove bookmarks, depending on whether you're clearing one link, several, or starting over completely. All three go through the same Bookmark manager.

Linkbry tags, used to archive or downgrade a link's status instead of deleting it outright.

The fastest way to remove one bookmark

You don't need the Bookmark manager for a single link. Click the filled star icon at the end of the address bar on the page you've bookmarked, then click Remove. That's the whole process.

Deleting versus just tidying up

A lot of β€œdelete” intent is really β€œI can't find anything in here anymore” β€” which deleting doesn't actually fix, since the ones you keep are still in the same flat, unsearchable pile. Tags and folders solve the underlying problem without losing anything.

  • Tag by status β€” read, reference, archive β€” instead of choosing keep-or-delete
  • Move stale links into an archive folder rather than losing them for good
  • Full-text search finds a link again even if you half-remember it

If you're clearing out years of buildup

Export first. It takes one click and gives you a safety copy of everything before you start deleting, in case a folder you clear turns out to have something you needed.

Steps

  1. Open the Bookmark manager: three-dot menu β†’ Bookmarks and lists β†’ Bookmark manager, or press Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Shift+O on Mac).
  2. For one bookmark: right-click it and choose Delete, or click the three-dot menu next to it and choose Delete.
  3. For several: click the first, hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and click the rest, then choose Delete from any selected item's menu.
  4. For everything in a folder: click inside it, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A) to select all, then click Delete.
  5. Made a mistake? Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z) immediately to undo the deletion.

Frequently asked questions

Can I undo a deleted bookmark in Chrome?

Yes, but only immediately after β€” press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) right away and it comes back. Once you've closed the Bookmark manager or done something else, there's no built-in way to recover it.

How do I delete all my Chrome bookmarks at once?

Open the Bookmark manager, click into the folder you want to clear (or Bookmarks bar for the top level), press Ctrl+A to select everything inside it, then click Delete. Repeat per top-level folder if you want everything gone.

Does deleting a bookmark delete the folder it's in?

No, deleting a bookmark only removes that link. Deleting a folder removes the folder and everything inside it, so check what's in a folder before deleting it if you're not sure.
